3 weeks to go and a hard 23 miles!

It is so hard to believe how close the race is getting! Less than a month! Anticipation and excitement abound! These last weeks of training seem to be getting quite a bit harder, but they will be over before you know it.

Monday morning, got up early and walked the dog before running an easy 3 miles. Ok, it wasn't my usualy early morning wake up because the kids are out of school on spring break. There was a light drizzle, and it was 35 degrees with winds NNW at 9 mph. Running around the neighborhood is getting so routine for me.

Distance: 3.16 mi; Time: 27:19; Pace: 8:34

Well, Tuesday morning was rainy, so I tried to run my tempo run on the treadmill at the gym. Wow, this was hard! I may have to call the treadmill the "dread"-mill. I couldn't believe how hard this turned out to be. It was supposed to be a 5 mile tempo, which I have done before. However I ran only 1.5 miles at tempo pace before I had to scale it back! I tried to get back up to speed but just couldn't do it. Instead of a total of 7 miles, ended up with 5.43! Yes, it was a big surprise to me. Could have to do with my allergies and asthma, even though I haven't been suffering an actual asthma "attack."

Distance: 5.43 mi; Time: 50:01; Pace: (overall) 9:13

Thursday ran an extra mile for 4. Ran first 3 with Travis, and as before he pushed the pace. We finished the first 3 with a pace of 8:08. It was a warm sunny day. 55 degrees and winds SW at 13 mph. It was our usual 3 mile trek to Kyle park and back on the bike path with an extra mile thrown in at the end.

Distance: 4.16 mi; Time: 34:34; Pace: 8:18

Saturday was big first for me. It was my first attempt and completion of 10 miles! It was really not that bad. First of all, it was a busy day, so I had to start my run by 6:30am. Yes, my day off I had to wake up early! But my 9 - 10 mile loop goes from the house to the east into downtown Troy. So by 3 to 4 miles into my run, I was running into the sunrise! Incredible! It was beautiful and really worth it. According to schedule, I took my first drink of gatorade at 45 minutes into the run, and then every 20 minutes after that. At each drink time, I walked ... yes, to avoid spilling on myself! But the breaks were helpful. Overall, I ended up with my feet just a little bit sore, but nothing major. At one point, I was feeling something in my right knee, but it went away. It was cool, with the temperature at 32 degrees and winds north at 13 mph. But it was clear and the start of a beautiful day!

Distance: 10.31 mi; Time: 1:30:02; Pace: 8:44

I'm feeling very confident of the distance for the half marathon. And on Sunday I got to talk with my brother-in-law who has done the Mini for the past 3 or 4 years in a row. He told of the music influence and the atmosphere with the cheering crowds. I am so ready to just go and have a good time with it. It will be an instant PR! There is definitely no need for speed. Of course, I know I'll run with the pace of the group I am in. But I'll work on enjoying the distance! I can't wait! But, I should continue to plod along ... and I will!
