It was a good week of running with one lesson learned during my hard day on Tuesday. I got in 22 miles making this the third 20+ mile run week of the year and the 2nd one in a row. Keeping it up now will be the next milestone for me.
Monday I ran with other people. Travis and Janae both from work ran with me for the first mile. It was definitely the slowest pace for me to run as I kept checking on them to make sure they were ok. After the first mile I took off to finish, and they turned around to be able to get back to the office on time. I picked it up a little bit to be sure to make my goal pace. It turned out to be no problem. Oh, and running slowly in shorts and a t-shirt kept it pretty cold for that first mile; not too much of a warm up. The temperature was 50 degrees with a 4 MPH wind from the east.
Distance: 3.01 miles; Time: 27:23; Pace: 9:05
Tuesday was heavy on my mind. I knew that I was going to be doing speedwork. And I knew that it was going to be a warm day. Well, it was a good hard workout, but it was very hard, and it was very warm. After running the intervals, I ended up taking off my shirt until I finished the total mileage. This also turned out to be the most mileage I have ever run during my lunch break. I have decided to run my Tuesday workouts early in the morning to avoid taking advantage of my lunch break. Also, as the days get warmer it will give me the chance to not stink up the office! The temperature was a very warm 60 degrees with plenty of sun and a south wind at 10 MPH. Oh, also got some wonderful blisters in my arches.
Total Distance: 7.07 miles; Speedwork = 3x 0.97 mi at 6:56, 7:07, & 7:22 (yeah, got tired!)
Thursday was another easy 3 mile run. It is amazing that I say "only" 3 miles as that mileage can be such a goal for others. I honestly don't feel like a blazing super kind of runner, but I guess I have built up to some kind of running status. I mean, normally 4 miles would be a minimum for me, and to run slower than 9 minute miles is actually a strain for me to run that slowly. But after running such a hard workout on Tuesday, it is nice to take advantage of the easy runs. The temperature was 48 degrees with winds from the north north west at 11 MPH. Sun feels good!
Distance: 3.03 miles; Time: 26:25; Pace: 8:43
Saturday, the other "dread." My long run, up to my maximum distance so far of 9 miles. This time I have prepared by running the other weeks with my "belt" on and I would try to use a bottle of Gatorade for this one. I did better by not ruining the run with a 2 or 3 mile pre-run with the dog. It was a little cool starting out with a temperature of 37 degrees and winds from the southeast at 9 MPH. It seemed as if it had been a while since I had run the downtown loop, but it was just as natural as any other run. I did detour myself toward the grass more than I ever had before to try to cushion myself. At 45 minutes into the run I was down town looping around the circle. I took my first drinks of Gatorade and didn't worry myself about having to stop at the lights for traffic. In the end it did not have a negative affect on my overall pace. The Gatorade did a funny little foaminess from the impact of each step. I didn't feel anything bad from drinking it. By the time the run ended almost an hour and a half later, the temperature was up to 45 degrees, and I was wishing I had worn shorts. It was a good run. Once again my feet did the blisters, but curiously they ended up disappearing later in the day. I might need new shoes, but they are definitely curious kind of blisters.
Distance: 9.22 miles; Time: 1:23:42; Pace: 9:05
I'll see if we can make time to visit Endurance Sports this weekend. Until then, I'll just keep plodding on ....
