Hmmm ... a day late on my training schedule and a day late in posting. Seems like a trend ....
Anyway, my schedule had me running 3 miles easy on Tuesday then 5 miles with speedwork on Wednesday with the big 4th of July race on Friday. I got to thinking that maybe I should switch the two and do the speedowrk on Tuesday instead. But after walking the dog, I felt particularly tired and unmovtivated. So I went back to bed for 30 minutes. I semi-made up for it by walking during my lunch break.
Then Wednesday morning, I got up and walked the dog then went back out for speedwork. A mile of warm up. Then the actual speed work: 3x 800 with 400 jogs. Well, after the first 0.53 mi and the jog that turned out to be only 0.15 mi (only about 240 m?) my GPS receiver was low on battery juice. So I walked back home and got a new battery. Then I went back out and started back into my 2nd run. Basically, I ran the three similar to what I had done previously 3 weeks ago. But with my shortened jogs between and my warm up and cool down just over a mile, my total mileage turned out to be 4.3 instead of 5.
But here we are now, resting today, ready for the 5k race tomorrow. Just how hard will I push myself? I only need to maintain an 8 minute pace to beat my previous PR. But the question remains: can I maintain a faster pace for the 3 miles? I think I'll start out watching 8 minutes on my watch, then I'll see how I feel. I'll at least shoot for finishing faster, but I won't try to kill myself at the start. Remember, your only goal is to beat 25:11. I can do this. And it will give me a good point of reference for future races, like if we run the Brukner Mosquito run (which totally won't match because it is a trail race) or the Mums Festival 5K in September. I don't think there is any time for any kind of race in August.
Well, we will see how Friday goes!
