3 Mile Easy Run (and skipped weekend long run)

First of all, the rest was once again quite poor. I know it was less than 5 hours of sleep, and it may have been as few as 4 1/2. That's bad. I'm hoping I can try to start a new habit by purposing to "shut down" earlier. We'll see how that goes tonight.

Secondly, fuel. I love tracking what I eat, and I've gotta wonder what anyone who reads this thinks. I mean, I'm being a bit optomistic to think anyone actually reads this, but on the other hand I am just proving to the world my "goat-ness." Yes, I just made up the word. Last night we had a wonderful chili! I could go on about the wonderful lasagna from the night before, but current practice for fuel goes back just under 24 hours. Oh, but 24 hours would go back to lunch yesterday, and that's when I had 2 servings of that left over lasagna! That was some tremendous lasagna. But wow, last night that was good chili! And I can honestly say, I don't remember having chili with pasta in it. But I like it! There was a lot of good stuff in there, like beans and tomatoes and topped with jalapenos. Of course, there was meat too. I think I only had 1 bowl which is a bit of a surprise. But I did have more of it for breakfast! The breakfast chili was mixed with some left over red beans and rice, so there was more beans and a good amount of extra carbs. About 10am I had a handful of almonds for a snack. Bet you can't wait until tomorrow to hear about the lunch I just ate!

And now the run. Let me preface this by saying that I skipped out on my 7 mile run on Saturday, and it was more than the snow that held me back. Because I could have run out there in it. I mean, Tim ran 8 miles in the snow at Brukner. The wind and cold discouraged me, along with the work of shovelling out the driveway. But ultimately, I had to work on the flag presentation for church, and it turned out that I used just about all afternoon and some into the evening to get that done.

Today, I was ready to run either inside or outside. At first I was thinking that it was pretty darn cold to be running outside. And it was only a 3 mile run, so running inside wouldn't tear me up too badly, right? Well, talking some about the run inside just reminded me how much I hated it the last time, so I started considering running outside. Then I recorded the outside temperatures and thought about changing that thought. Then I looked back at last weekend's run with Tim, and I noticed that it was warmer today. Not by much, but it was warmer. Todays temperature was 16 degrees with winds ESE at 8 MPH. Oh yeah, a veritable heat wave!

The run was actually a bit of an adventure. I have never run in snow before. I ran to the park to pick up the bike trail. Between the city park and the bike trail, there was bit of unplowed lane. I followed in the footsteps of what looked like a ski track. Getting to the bike trail by the pool areal, I found that places were quite treacherous. One section was total ice, and I slowed down to walk through picking my steps carefully. The next questionable area was the bridge. It had been plowed off, but the center looked like ice. There was a very thin strip of plowed snow on the sides, so I carefully walked along that to the other side of the bridge. After that, there were several spots on the path were snow went across the path since the levy on the right side made for some primo sledding area. In fact, at the end of that section there was a family who were sledding right there! At least they waited on me to pass before sliding down the hill. The path plowage ran into the parking lot, and I did a little loop there to the next section of plowed area. It reminded me of the "packed, groomed granular" of skiing trips past. It was good for running on because it was soft enough that it wasn't ice but plowed enough that I wasn't up to my ankles in snow! The path out to Kyle Park was more of the same, and by this time I decided to run back on the streets as they would probably be more clear. And that they were. A jog over to 4th Street allowed me to end up running right to the front of the office.

As I did two weeks ago, I wore my facemask. It is definitely worth what I paid for it. Today I learned from two weeks ago and wore thicker gloves over my thin running gloves. My fingers appreciated the extra shield against the cold until I warmed up. By the halfway mark, I removed the heavier gloves and did fine in the cold. Overall it was a very good foray into the frigid world, and I have no doubts that I'll be trying this again soon. Of course, tomorrow it is supposed to
be snowing ... the next winter storm! We'll see how that goes!

Total Distance - 3.50 mi; Time - 32:41; Pace - 9:20
